The importance of reporting and data analysis of hate crimes

Mark Sangster, vice-president of Waterloo-based cybersecurity firm eSentire, said about the rising online hate crimes: “”I think that’s the problem is a lot of people are suffering in silence here and we’re never really going to know the full extent of it…..”

In Ottawa, The number of hate/bias-motivated crimes increased by 155% from 2015 to 2020. In total, the community reported 655 incidents in Ottawa in five years. According to Stats Canada 2019 report, Ottawa has the 2nd highest police-reported hate crimes in Canada. #UnitedWayEastOntario, the #CityofOttawa and #SocialPlanningCouncilofOttawa worked together to create the Neighbourhood Equity Index (NEI).
