A Call to Police Social Media

This is the right call because this is one of the effective ways to combat various forms of extremist moments.

Combating disinformation is the key. The extremists use social media, chatrooms, and websites to create their reality while also rendering them vulnerable to influence from other like-minded groups and individuals.

To combat disinformation and reduce the spread of hateful ideas and their political influence, we need to:

1) Continue to prioritise uprooting right-wing extremism by resourcing relevant agencies;

2) Conduct a robust investigation into the roots of Freedom Convoy;

3) Better screen military, security and law enforcement members to ensure the institutions remain committed to civil rights and other democratic values.

4) Demand politicians call out rhetoric that radicalises and openly shun those who embrace supremacist and extremist ideas and conspiracy theories;

5) Adopt a whole-society approach for open rejection of hate and violence, and

6) Ensure law enforcement has the necessary tools to do the job.

These steps would marginalise extreme voices and help us create a safer Canada for all.
