Addressing the root cause of inequity and radicalisation

Jagmeet Singh says economic inequality makes Canadians more vulnerable to radicalisation. He is worried about the growing divisions in the country. To address the issue, we must also remember that we can’t blame everything we hear from the white supremacist movement as a conspiracy theory. It Is important to distinguish between conspiracy theories and reality. We must agree that it’s not only racialized people who face inequity. The so-considered white privileged folks are also facing disparities – of course, not because of systemic discrimination.

The climate that allows opportunists to weave conspiracy theories, such as the displacement of white people, is one where people are already reeling under layers of inequity and feel desperate. Imagine a white father with three unemployed children in their twenties living in his basement.

For the extremist fringe, it is easy to point to a scapegoat and say that you can’t have a decent living because of all these new immigrants and their supporters in the government bent upon replacing you all. Therefore, we can’t dismiss reality with the broad brush of conspiracy theory and do nothing to address the root causes. #Racism #inequity
