Let’s commit to not leaving behind a legacy of shame

This shows how institutions that supported slavery and racism in the past are being humiliated and disgraced today. The same will happen to the systems, structures and institutions that sustain the legacy of systemic racism in our age.

From the pitiful response https://lnkd.in/edqrtM2b to the white supremacist movement to the exponential inequity https://lnkd.in/epuhSyX4 , what we see and hear is not normal. The overt and covert resistance to anti-racism work and the layering of many barriers to building equity is not normal.

To avoid being recorded in history books as accomplices to continuing the legacy of systemic racism and oppression, we must challenge what we consider normal.

Just as the benign paintings of the old plantations – showing orderly agrarian paradise with happy, childlike slaves cared for by their masters –couldn’t hide the injustices and unfairness in the 18, 19th and 20th centuries; similarly, the cheerful, cosmetic diversity posters of multi-race, smiley faces in the early 21st century would fail to cover the continuation of the same unfairness and exponential inequities in the 21st century.

We need to get real if we are serious about not leaving behind a legacy of shame.
