Lest we forget: The status-quo prevails.
For clarity, Canadian legislation is framed so that a police officer needs to obtain written consent from the Attorney General before s/he can proceed with charges for acts motivated solely or in part by hatred, bias or prejudice regarding a person’s race, ethnicity/nationality, language, colour, religion, sex, age, mental or physical disability, age or sexual orientation. Given that minorities continue to experience both over- and under-policing in their communities. No wonder victims of hate crime are reluctant to report victimisation.

The Department of Justice says it wants to ensure hatred is better defined but otherwise has no plans to overhaul the way hate crimes are dealt with in the courts
