We need to call out hate collectively

In 2016, people gathered and shouted at a bus full of refugees: “We are people. In other words, they meant, “you are not.” It was pure hatred. Hate is not the same as anger. Hate is a feeling that needs time and intention to nurture and build up.

This incident led a German journalist, Carolin Emcke, to ask: “Why is it that these people do not see human beings on the other side of the bus window?”

Carolin ends up writing a book, Against Hate. She concludes: “rejection of the ‘other’ has always existed, but something has changed. Now the hate is open and unabashed, free of all restraint”.

Our famous Canadian psychologist Steven Pinker adds that we live in the “most peaceful era” in human history. Despite that, the number of hate-motivated crimes and attached are constantly rising.

There is no quick and easy solution. The only way to confront hate is to resist its spread – reject the invitation to contagion – and call it out collectively.
